Why heat is hard on concrete

Hot, dry, windy conditions pull water out of the surface faster than it can rise from below. The top of the slab shrinks before the concrete has the strength to resist it, which causes plastic shrinkage cracks, often within hours. Heat also speeds up setting, shrinking the window the crew has to place and finish the slab.

Pour early

Good crews schedule summer pours for first light so most of the placing and finishing happens before the day heats up. Ask your contractor what time the truck is scheduled.

Prepare the base

Dampening the base and forms before the pour keeps dry ground from sucking water out of the bottom of the slab. Shading or windbreaks help on exposed sites.

Don't add water to make it easier

Adding water on site makes concrete easier to work but weaker and more prone to cracking and dusting. If the mix is setting too fast, the right fixes are set-retarding admixtures ordered from the plant and evaporation retarders sprayed on the surface.

Cure it properly

Curing means keeping moisture in the concrete while it gains strength, especially in the first week. That can be a curing compound sprayed on after finishing, wet curing, or covering the slab. Skipping it is a common reason summer slabs end up with a weak, dusty surface.

Cut joints on time

Control joints need to be cut or tooled before the slab starts cracking on its own. In hot weather that window arrives sooner, so a crew that saw-cuts joints the next day may be too late.
